Crispy Hasselback Potatoes: A Family Favorite

Golden, crispy Hasselback potato, baked to perfection with a buttery, breadcrumb topping.

Crispy Hasselback Potatoes are a family favorite in our home, passed down through the years and always a hit at the dinner table. I remember the first time I made them—it was a special occasion, and I was looking for a side dish to pair with a delicious roast. These potatoes quickly became a staple for our meals, especially when served alongside a perfectly cooked steak or roast beef. Over time, they’ve become one of those dishes I make almost every month because they’re simple, flavorful, and easy to prepare.

Family Recipe That’s Been Loved for Years

These Crispy Hasselback Potatoes aren’t just any potatoes. They’re a recipe that has been in our family for as long as I can remember. My grandmother used to make them, and they were always the highlight of any meal. When I started cooking more regularly, I realized just how much I loved them, too. There’s something magical about the crispy edges and tender middle, and with the right seasoning, they’re the perfect balance of flavors.

The Key to Perfect Crispy Hasselback Potatoes

What makes these potatoes stand out is the technique. I always choose firm, waxy potatoes for this recipe, as they hold their shape and cook perfectly. The thin slices allow the edges to crisp up beautifully, while the inside remains soft. One of the key tips I’ve learned over the years is to avoid over-brushing the potatoes with the butter-oil mixture. A light brush once at the start of baking, and another halfway through if you like, is all you need to get that perfect golden finish. Too much butter can make them soggy; we want them nice and crispy!

A Potato Dish We Serve With Steak and More

Crispy Hasselback Potatoes are the perfect side with venison roast, oven-roasted whole chicken, roast beef, and even lamb. It’s a dish that feels a little fancy, but it’s easy to make and absolutely delicious. And if you’re anything like our family, make sure to cook a few extra; you can never have too many of these crispy, buttery potatoes! They disappear fast, especially when paired with a juicy steak.

Now that you know the story behind these Crispy Hasselback Potatoes, it’s time for you to try them for yourself. The recipe is up next, and I hope it becomes a new favorite in your family as well!

Additional Tips:

Using the Wooden Spoon Method for Hasselback Potatoes
  1. Using the Wooden Spoon Method: To ensure your potatoes don’t get cut all the way through, place the potato on a wooden spoon or chopsticks on either side of the potato. This simple trick will stop the knife from slicing down, leaving the bottom intact for the signature form of Hasselback potatoes.
  2. Even Slicing: For the best results, try to slice your potatoes as evenly as possible, about 3 mm apart. This helps ensure that they cook uniformly and develop that perfect crispiness.
  3. Breadcrumb Variations or Additions: Add grated Parmesan for extra flavor.
  4. Flavor Boost: If you’re not using garlic, try adding fresh herbs (like thyme or rosemary) to the butter-oil mixture for additional aromatic flavors.
  5. Check for Crispiness: Depending on your potato size, baking time may vary. Keep an eye on the potatoes as they bake.
  6. Serving Tip: These crispy potatoes make a fantastic side to roasted meats, grilled fish, or even a fresh salad. Pair them with your favorite dipping sauce or enjoy them as they are!
