Finnish Easter Recipes (Traditional & Simple)

Finnish Easter starters with salmon garnished with lemon and dill and traditional egg salad on serving platters

Finnish Easter food is simple and centered around shared family meals. Starters often include smoked or cured fish, egg dishes, and breads such as Karelian pies and Archipelago bread, both usually served with butter or egg butter. Main dishes typically feature roasted lamb, chicken, or hearty stews such as Karelian stew. Desserts add a sweet finish with coffee cakes, pasha, and mämmi.

In my family, Easter has always been a time to gather around the table and enjoy familiar food. Many recipes come from my grandmother, while others have become part of our own traditions. We always aim for balance. Fresh dishes sit alongside richer ones, and the meal is meant to be shared.

In this post, I’ve collected my Finnish recipes that work well for an Easter menu. You can build a full holiday table or simply choose a few traditional dishes to try.

Fresh Starters for a Finnish Easter Table

In my family, the Easter table begins with a mix of simple, familiar dishes, prepared with care and meant to be shared. Fish plays a central role, and the starters are usually a mix of cold and warm dishes that can be shared.

Grilled Salmon Fillet or smoked white fish are common starters in my family. They bring clean, simple flavors to the table. We also serve Cured Salmon for a traditional and fresh option. Horseradish Sauce always goes with the fish. It adds a sharp, creamy contrast that lifts the flavors. Egg salad appears on our Easter table as well. It adds a soft and comforting element.

No Finnish table feels complete without Karelian Pies with Egg Butter (munavoi). We serve them slightly warm so they stay soft and flavorful. We also include slices of traditional Finnish Archipelago Bread. It adds a gentle sweetness and pairs well with both butter and fish.

These starters create a balanced beginning to the meal. They feel fresh, comforting, and rooted in Finnish tradition. We often add simple pickled vegetables for a bright, tangy contrast.

Finnish Easter Main Dishes

Main dishes on a Finnish Easter table feel warm and generous. They bring comfort and balance to the meal. We often serve several dishes at once so everyone can share and choose freely.

A centerpiece is roasted lamb. I serve it with a simple lemon and garlic sauce. You can find my recipe here: Roasted Lamb (karitsan paahtopaisti). I also add tender green beans for freshness. Alongside the lamb, I serve Hasselback Potatoes. They turn crisp on the edges and stay soft in the middle.

Traditional Macaroni Casserole is another familiar dish. It appears on many Finnish tables during both holidays and everyday meals. It is a meatless side that work well with roasts and different main dishes.

I also add oven-roasted vegetables and a simple green salad. They bring color, freshness, and balance to the table: Roasted Vegetables and Green Salad.

These dishes create a generous and Filling Easter main course. They highlight traditional Finnish flavors and simple home-style cooking.

Finnish Easter Desserts & Sweet Traditions

Finnish Easter desserts are often simple, fresh, and slightly fruity, offering a lighter ending after a rich and comforting main course. Berries play an important role in many traditional sweets, bringing a bright contrast to the Easter table.

Some of my favourite desserts for Easter include Finnish Blueberry Mini Cakes (mustikkaleivos), a Fresh Strawberry Tart, and a simple No-Bake Cheesecake. All of these are easy to prepare ahead of time and work beautifully for a festive gathering.

A very traditional Easter dessert in Finland is mämmi, a dark rye pudding with a naturally sweet, slightly malty flavour. It has a long history in Finnish food culture and is most often served cold with cream or milk. Today, it is typically bought ready-made from a local supermarket and served simply with whipped cream, making it an easy but very traditional part of the Easter table.

Try one of these desserts to end the meal on a light and comforting note. Enjoy with coffee!

About Finnish Karelian Pies

Karelian pies have always been part of our Easter table, and they are one of the recipes I connect most strongly with my grandmother. I still remember how she shaped each one so neatly, lining them up on the tray before baking. We would always eat them slightly warm, topped with egg butter (munavoi), simple and comforting in the best way.

They are just as good served with cured or smoked salmon, which adds a fresh and slightly salty contrast to the soft rice filling and rye crust. Sometimes we keep it very simple, and sometimes we add a little extra, depending on the occasion.

If you’d like to try making them at home, you can find my recipe here: Finnish Karelian pies (karjalanpiirakat).

Whether you celebrate Easter or simply enjoy the arrival of spring, I hope these recipes bring a little warmth and inspiration to your table. This time of year is perfect for slowing down, sharing a meal, and enjoying simple, familiar flavors with the people around you. Wishing you a peaceful and delicious spring. 🌿
