Finnish Midsummer Food Traditions

Finnish Midsummer (Juhannus) is one of the most anticipated celebrations of the year. It marks the height of summer, long light nights, and time spent with family and friends, often at a summer cottage surrounded by nature. Food plays an important role in the celebration, but the focus is usually on simple seasonal ingredients, easy preparation, and sharing meals together.

In my family, we often plan the Midsummer food for the entire holiday weekend. For Midsummer Eve, Midsummer Day, and sometimes the following Sunday. While meal times tend to be more relaxed than during everyday life, most families still gather around the table for breakfast, a main meal, and coffee breaks throughout the day.

A Relaxed Celebration Built Around Long Summer Days

One of the best things about Finnish Midsummer is that there is no need to rush. The days are long, the evenings are bright, and meals fit naturally around outdoor activities, sauna sessions, and time spent with family and friends.

I try to plan the menu so that I can prepare many dishes in advance. It is easier to enjoy the holiday rather than spend the entire weekend in the kitchen. The emphasis is on good food, good company, and making the most of the short Nordic summer.

Traditional Finnish Midsummer Savory Table

A typical Finnish Midsummer table often includes cured or smoked salmon, egg salad, Finnish new potatoes, pickled cucumber, horseradish sauce, salads, archipelago bread, and egg butter. These simple dishes celebrate the season and use ingredients that are especially popular in early summer.

Everything is served family-style, allowing everyone to help themselves and enjoy a little bit of everything.

Karelian Pies and Savory Pastries

Karelian pies are a common sight on the Midsummer table and are often served at breakfast with egg butter. They are easy to prepare in advance and pair well with other traditional dishes.

Savory pastries such as slab meat pie or cabbage pie are also popular. Depending on the day, they can be served as a light lunch, enjoyed after a sauna, or offered during an afternoon coffee break. Many Finns also grill sausages during Midsummer, especially at the cottage, making them another simple and traditional option for a relaxed summer meal.

Grilled Meals and Summer Favorites

Many of our meals during the Midsummer weekend usually revolve around the grill. One favorite in our family is grilled flat iron steak served with black pepper sauce, grilled tomatoes, and a fresh green salad. Other grilled meats, such as beef sirloin or chicken, work just as well, and many families have their own traditions.

Alongside the grilled meats, we often prepare a platter of grilled vegetables. Eggplant, roasted tomatoes, and grilled salads are family favorites. They are easy to cook on the grill and make a colorful addition to the Midsummer table.

Strawberries and classic Finnish summer desserts

No Finnish Midsummer celebration feels complete without strawberries. We often serve Finnish strawberry layer cake, which is often the centerpiece of the dessert table when local strawberries are in season. Light, fresh, and beautiful, it captures the flavors of Finnish summer perfectly.

Another festive favorite is Ellen Svinhufvud Cake, a traditional Finnish layer cake that is well-suited to celebrations. Alongside the larger cakes, cinnamon rolls, and other coffee table treats are often available throughout the weekend.

Celebrating Summer Around the Table

Finnish Midsummer food is less about elaborate menus and more about bringing people together. Whether the table holds smoked salmon and new potatoes, freshly baked Karelian pies, grilled meats, or a strawberry-filled celebration cake, the goal is the same: to enjoy the short but beautiful Nordic summer with family, friends, and plenty of good food.

Wishing you a sunny and relaxed Midsummer filled with good food and good company!
